i create .. i teach

This is me: mom, nurturer, teacher, rightbrainer, traveler, seeker, problem solver, maker, putterer, friend, kitchen queen, handiperson, mentor, nature freak, birder, advocate, reader, scavenger, recycler, student of life

I am a visual artist with a background in journalism, graphic art and design. It is my firm belief that while talent is an asset, it is determination and engagement that forge a path to creativity (regardless of your experience).

I believe that we all have the desire to create. If making art, in one form or another, is a way of getting acquainted with your self, most of us would like to have this intimate knowledge. The discovery of encaustic painting is what lured me into the vast world of visual art.

I've found great love and passion in coaching and nurturing creativity. I love teaching. My art practice is enhanced through continuing education. I travel to workshops around the U.S. and apply this learning to my own work and in the classes I teach. I seek to work with instructors whose output and methods are inventive. From these  influences I've learned to teach and inspire others.

I've never felt happier or more free than when I am learning or making. I've spent over a decade learning encaustic with no end in sight. It was while living in Boston that a chance encounter at a gallery opening led to an invitation to teach; a new career path.

My early years were spent in Clarkston (MI). I was an aspiring writer on a journalism track when I earned my degree at Oakland University (Rochester, MI). Various forks in the road led to jobs in magazine publishing, advertising and marketing. While painting and showing my work are current mainstays, I continue to work as a freelance graphic designer when the right projects come my way. I've lived in Boston and Florida. My 20-year-old daughter studies politics at New York University. I love visiting her.

As  a newcomer to the Grand Traverse area, I find myself digging in again, teaching private classes in my studio and workshops at Higher Arts Gallery on Union Street (downtown Traverse City). I hope to foster the growth of this fascinating, ancient and archival medium in my new home town ..
